A bird's nest 'farm' is constructed such that it has a similar condition with a swiftlet dwelling Cave, able to attract the swiflets so that they want to live and breed in it. The basic requirements is a quiet and deserted building with a suitable temperature and humidity.

Q. Can Swiftlets be cultivated on high grounds? A. Swiftlets normally prefer low grounds, preferably not more than 500 m above sea level. Therefore if you select a house/building for breeding of swiftlets choose one that is not more than 500 m above sea level.
Q. What other criteria do I look for in selecting a suitable location for a Bird's Nest farm? A. Firstly determine that the location is an established swiftlet zone; is it in the direct flight path of swiftlets or lastly is it within a radius of 10 km of an established swiftlet area. All these will ensure that your investment in the cultivation of Bird's Nest will be successful.
Q. What are the returns for a successful Bird's Nest 'farm'? A. For a built up area of about 1,600 sq ft of space, the maximum harvest per year will be about 100 kg @ the present (Sept. 2001) price of appx. US$1,800.00 per kg. (Raw unprocessed nest). But a conservative figure of about 2-5 kg per harvest (4-12 harvest per year) after a period of 2 to 3 yrs of initial investment is easily achievable.
